Of all the sports, a cricket groundsperson has the greatest effect on how a match can develop so a basic knowledge of the game is essential. The 1-day is a theory course which gives an overview of all the processes, machinery and equipment required to produce and maintain a quality playing surface, always with an emphasis on Health and Safety. No practical work takes place on the day but time is spent out on the pitch to discuss its condition and any particular challenges, based on a core soil sample which is taken at the time. The 2-day incorporates practical work/demonstrations to illustrate and support the theory learning.
